Birth and Beginnings

Gustav Heinrich Ernst Martin Wilhelm Furtwängler was born on January 25, 1886 in Berlin.

He was born into an artistic family; his father Adolf was a renowned archaeologist and student of Greek culture. His mother Adelheid was an amateur painter. There were not many musicians in the family, but Furtwängler started to show an interest in music at the age of 7, writing his first composition within a year of learning the basics of the piano keyboard and musical notation.

He showed several key elements of his personality from childhood, including a keen intelligence, a distinct difficulty in getting along with his schoolmates and peers, a distrust of authority that got him in trouble in school, and a love of nature and walking, hiking and other solitary sports.
