Mikhail Baryshnikov is a legendary Russian-American dancer, choreographer, and actor who has left an indelible mark on the world of ballet and contemporary dance. Born on January 27, 1948, in Riga, Latvia, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest ballet dancers of the 20th century.
Baryshnikov began his training at the Vaganova School in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) and quickly rose to prominence as a principal dancer with the Kirov Ballet (now known as the Mariinsky Ballet).
In 1974, he defected to the United States, where he joined the American Ballet Theatre and later served as its artistic director.
