University students have continued to express their concerns as the reality of the federal budget cuts sets in.
Following the recent rally in Canberra, students are now labelling the 7.5% increase in fees a “set up for failure”.
“When you take into consideration the income of some households and how much uni already costs, it doesn’t make sense,” said University of Melbourne science student, Lareine Goh.
With the minimum wage for 20 year olds in Australia sitting at $16.48 per hour, and the weekly costs of a Victorian averaging $1,225, Ms Goh said that the hiked fees are “not realistic”.
“Paying for textbooks and public transport, getting to and from uni; it all adds up,” she said.
Ms Goh also said that the fee increases could deter many high school students from pursuing a degree, mimicking workforce and labour economist, Dr Ian Li’s comments.
“The primary reason disadvantaged students consider droppi
