Maiya Usova and Aleksandr Zhulin started to skate together in , later marrying in Their first big achievement was a gold at the Winter Universiade.

At the Winter Universiade they won silver and their first World and European Championships medals, both silvers, came in Their only World and European titles came in and besides their and medals from the World and European Championships, they were on the podium at the World Championships from , and at the Europeans in and They also won a bronze at the Winter Olympics and silver in , while their only Soviet title came in After the Olympics, Usova and Zhulin turned professional and skated together until , after which Usova skated with Yevgeny Platov.

After retiring from competition, Usova worked as a figure skating coach with Platov and she later coached at the Igloo in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey. She is also an ISU technical specialist for Russia.
